Resurrecting the Hasselblad 500ELX - Battery converters!
Переглядів 7 тис.8 років тому
Production of the NiCad batteries originally used in the Hasselblad 500ELX motor drive ceased a ways back, and it seemed that our beloved battery-driven Hasselblads would never whir again. But there are a number of good converters available to turn standard 9v batteries into Hassy batteries. Let's see how it's done! The Basic Guide to Carbon Transfer Printing - Part 4
Переглядів 18 тис.9 років тому
The long-awaited final instalment, developing the carbon transfer print in nothing more than warm water! Not only is carbon printing a process to produce images on paper, it's a search to produce the most perfect version of a print, and sometimes things don't always go to plan!

The Basic Guide to Carbon Transfer Printing - Part 2
Переглядів 21 тис.9 років тому
In Part 2, the 'glop' we made in Part 1 is transformed into carbon tissue, hung to dry and soon to be made light sensitive (coming in Part 3!). Bear in mind that this is a basic guide. Any failings in perfect technique should immediately be overlooked :P
The Basic Guide to Carbon Transfer Printing - Part 1

Much like the previous Rough and Ready Salt Printing video, here is a very basic guide to carbon transfer printing. I'm sure there are some master printers out there having coronaries watching the rough and readiness of my demonstrations, but hey, it works and some nice images ensue. Lilly - And Finally....
Переглядів 5419 років тому
Lilly was cold, tired and a little sick, and about to be late for a train. With only 25 minutes remaining to shoot a couple of outdoor collodion plates, using old, red, contrasty collodion and shooting under an overcast, low-UV sky, we had our work cut out for us to get a decent result. The resulting contrasty plates were the best of the day, though a long way from those I was aiming for. Lucki...
Sneak Peek at Carbon Transfer Printing
Переглядів 2,3 тис.9 років тому
Taking a look at a new carbon transfer print emerging from its hot water bath. Carbon transfer printing is a technique from the mid-1800s, uses no silver to form an image, and will outlast eternity. The sensitization of the gelatin is effected by potassium dichromate, a carcinogenic substance with a vile orange/yellow colour, hence the sickly colour of the water, and the staining of my gloves. ...
Salt Printing - 16 Step Rough & Ready Version
Переглядів 110 тис.9 років тому
I talk a lot about salt printing, but I realised that not very many people know what a salt print actually is. So I threw together a quick video, as a trip through the final test print from my first 2015 exhibition image. Wikipedia says about salt prints: The salt print was the dominant paper-based photographic process for producing positive prints during the period from 1839 through approximat...
Wiping the Silver Veil from a Tintype (or How Not To Develop a Tintype)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.9 років тому
What happens to wetplate collodion plates when developed in a silver-rich, many-times-recycled ferrous solution. The veil of silver wipes away after drying. I'd guess this would not be possible with a wet plate, as the cotton ball would wipe the soft collodion away too. 5x7 tintype photograph
Textured carbon transfer print (when wet)
Переглядів 1,8 тис.10 років тому
This is the high-relief texture of a wet carbon print. The gelatin base of the print absorbs water in the processing and areas of deepest black become the most enlarged. As the print dries, the gelatin contracts and the relief all but disappears, meaning that if you want a very defined relief on a dry carbon print, you need to make a super-thick gelatin base on which to expose your image.

Lilly Steampunk Wetplate Collodion shoot

Shooting with Lilly on a little steampunk-inspired wetplate collodion image. Using the Black Art Woodcraft-made 8x10 wet plate camera. Shot on a Canon 5DMkII 24-105mm. Keen-eyed viewers may notice a small piece of footage taken from a previous video. I forgot to shoot the coating and sensitizing stages for this session, so had to resort to using old footage. you are NOT ready to shoot, on these PRO-S and PRO-SD backs, there is an interlock double exposure safety meaning if the 'switch' bellow the winding lever shows the red dot, this interlock is OFF, allowing multi-exposures!!, and if you are not carefull (remind oneself to WIND ON the film!!) it WON'T do it for you, as this is a manual camera, this safety acts on the shutter button, same as the darkslide and mirror winding lever, they all stop the shutter from completing its travel, and firing the shutter; in this case, until the winding lever is cycled, and the red tag in the frame counter disapears!, then you can shoot safetly on an un-exposed frame of film.

You can slide it vertically behind the left side focusing knob/shoe mount. It's an actual feature and shown here in the manual (on pdf page 25): www.cameramanuals.org/mamiya_pdf/mamiya_rb67_professional.pdf

Are the fumes of the developer extremely harmful? Does inhaling the solution cause cancer in any way? Because I’ve read all the safety papers of the chemicals and keep getting mixed responses. Thanks.

Acetic acid is not necessarily harmful as long as you don`t sniff closely. But, it is an acid still so should be treated with respect. Developer of this type is absolutely safe though. Good you are being cautious.

Interesting but what a waste of water ! Unacceptable. If you really kept the water flowing for 10min each time this would be 6-700 liters of water. That’s ecologically irresponsible. Better leave the pic in a bucket to clean - seriously.

I am still torn between getting the F4S or a F5. The F4 is more appealing because one can remove the MB-22 battery grip if they have the MB-20 to use on the F4 thus getting the best of both worlds. The F4 is a better looking camera of the two.

Do you use 99% acetic acid when making developers? My results always look like fog and the image itself is blurry. I can't see it well. I tried varying the exposure time and the development time did not exceed 15 seconds.
